You Are a Person of Interest: Rules of Engagement for Spiritual Warfare
Much of what you go through is not random — it is because of who you are. Learn the first rule of engagement for spiritual warfare: understanding that your life carries spiritual significance, and the enemy is responding to your potential.

There is a reason some believers seem to attract resistance the moment they get serious about God. It is not bad luck. It is not coincidence. And it is not proof that you are doing something wrong.
Much of what you go through is because of who you are — because of what you have been called to do, because of the mantle, the mandate, and the anointing on your life, and because of your assignment in the Kingdom of God. The enemy does not want you to advance. But here is the good news: he cannot stop you. God has you covered.
This teaching begins a series on what I call the rules of engagement for spiritual warfare — the truths I wish someone had organized for me when I was coming up, so I could have connected the dots sooner. It will never be everything. But it is enough for God to start a conversation with you, one that the Holy Spirit will continue in a way that is unique and specific to your situation.
Rule of Engagement Number One: You Are a Person of Interest
The first rule of engagement is this: you are a person of interest.
Maybe you have been confused, asking, "Why is he coming for me?" Understand this — it is clear to the angels, it is clear to the demons, it is clear to everyone but you: you are a person of interest because of the purpose, the mantle, and the mandate God has placed on your life.
Maybe your church never identified it. Maybe your family never had the language to articulate it. But everybody knows there is something different about you. When you come into a room, you are consistently confronting spirits you do not even realize are there. I told a spiritual daughter of mine recently: the devil is not starting a fight with you. The devil is hitting you back. The presence of God on your life, the authority you possess and have not yet fully embraced — that picked the fight.
What Makes You Consequential
The enemy is not intimidated by your title. He is not impressed by your vocabulary. He is not concerned simply because you attend church. What makes you consequential is your agreement with God, your obedience to God, your transformation by God, and your usefulness to the purposes of God.
The greater your agreement with Heaven, the greater your potential to disrupt what darkness wants to preserve.
And here is what should encourage you: even at your baseline — even when you are not praying like you should, not fasting like you could, not in the Word the way you want to be — the enemy is still afraid of you. He is scared of your potential. Scared of your yes. Scared of what God has in mind because of you, because he understands the power of one surrendered person. He understands that greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
This does not mean Satan is omniscient or omnipresent — he is neither. He does not know the mind and will of God. It means that a surrendered believer whose life is becoming increasingly useful to God represents something the kingdom of darkness must oppose. Your life is becoming more purposeful for God and less useful to darkness. That is why the pressure comes.
The Enemy's Strategy: Associate Your Yes With Trouble
Here is a trick of the enemy you must discern: he wants you to subconsciously connect your ministry call and mandate to trouble, trial, tribulation, and spiritual warfare — so that over time, you will not want anything to do with it. His plan is to overwhelm you, to exhaust you ahead of time, to make you associate your yes to God with trauma.
That is a lie. Scripture tells us we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. God has already pre-arranged a good life for you. Yes, you will go through trials and circumstances — but that is the school of the Holy Spirit, teaching you how to deploy your gifts, how to use the Word of God as currency for your life, how to walk in the power of prayer and praise.
If no one ever came against you, you would never sharpen your skills. God is not trying to kill you; He is trying to develop you — your spiritual senses, your spiritual ear, your spiritual eye, your stamina, your groundedness in Him. Some of what you face is training. What we must refuse is the enemy going overboard beyond what God intended — and that is why your perspective has to stay in place.
You Are Not in This by Yourself
The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. And here is the promise that undergirds all of it: you are not fighting alone.
“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them. (Psalm 34:7)”
He goes before you, making every crooked place straight and every rough place plain. He is your rear guard. He is a shield for you. You have the indwelling Spirit of God living inside of you, and He has given His angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways — not just you, but your children, your family, your entire household.
That matters, because one of the enemy's favorite tactics is to get at you by messing with the people closest to you — to distract you, to get you off your game. You have to fight for your focus in God. And as you do, what you cannot do for yourself, God will do for you. What you make happen for Him, He will make happen for you.
The next time the enemy tries to intimidate you, talk back to him and let him know you know you have backup:
“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (Luke 10:19)”
When the Enemy Comes In Like a Flood
Scripture promises that when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord lifts up a standard against him. For the believer, that standard is the Word of God and your prayer posture.
When pressure comes, it is not supposed to drive you to drinking, smoking, cussing, and fighting. It is supposed to drive you to the Word of God — so that your response can come into alignment with Him. The moment the enemy comes at you and you answer with the Word, you are gaining ground. You are maturing. You are becoming familiar with the arsenal.
Look at Jesus. After fasting, He was led into the wilderness to be tempted. Satan came and said, "If You are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread." And Jesus — the Word made flesh — answered with the Word: "It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."
He was declaring: my belly is not my god. I do not live on physical provision alone. My paycheck is not my source — God is my source. The job is a seed bag, but I live off the harvest. The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof.
This is why one of the first areas the enemy often attacks is your finances. Money touches nearly every part of your life, and if the enemy can destabilize your finances, he may be able to destabilize your focus. But watch how the mature believer responds. When financial pressure comes, you do not surrender to panic—you fast, pray, and run to the Word of God to discover what God has said concerning your situation. You recognize that money is a resource, but God is your Source. His Word anchors your faith, directs your decisions, and reminds you that His provision is never limited by what you can presently see.
Never treat the Bible as mere literature, or as a tool for winning arguments. The Word of God is an arsenal — the sword of the Spirit, the shield of faith. Do not use it merely to intimidate the enemy. Use it to eviscerate him.
Stand Your Ground
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10–11)”
Study Ephesians 6 until it becomes part of you. Learn each piece of your armor:
- The helmet of salvation — to guard your mind and the way you think.
- The breastplate of righteousness — to protect your heart and your identity in Christ.
- The shield of faith — to extinguish every lie the enemy throws at you.
- The shoes of the gospel of peace — to keep you steady and ready to move.
- The sword of the Spirit — God's Word, your offensive weapon.
Think of those shoes as cleats with spikes. They help you dig in and stand firm. But they also let you run. That is the mindset of a believer at rest: you do not wait for the fight to find you. You already know the battle has been won. You are not afraid, because God has not given you a spirit of fear. He has given you power, love, and a sound mind.
Here is something we must recover: before you met Christ, you would not let anyone push you around. Somewhere along the way, many of us became too passive. The weapons have changed — but the posture has not. The demeanor has not. The attitude has not. The enemy still needs to hear the same thing: "I am not the one."
When you know the truth, the truth sets you free. The enemy can no longer incarcerate you. He cannot imprison you. He cannot rule over you. You know who you are. You know who God is. You know that you and God are working together.
So remember this: the enemy often attacks what you could become before it ever becomes visible. Your greatest threat to darkness is simply this — becoming the person God called you to be.
Reflection Questions
- Have you been interpreting your resistance as punishment instead of recognizing it as a response to your potential?
- Where has the enemy tried to make you associate your yes to God with trouble and trauma?
- When pressure comes, what is your first response — and does it drive you toward the Word or away from God?
- Who in your household do you need to consciously place under the covering of God's promises?
A Strategic Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You that I am not in this by myself.
I declare that I am a person of interest — called, chosen, and mandated by God. I will know exactly who I am. I will understand my gifts, my calling, and the things God has uniquely created in me. I will not be manipulated. I will not be diminished. I will not be deceived.
I shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth fruit in its season. My leaf shall not wither, and whatever I do shall prosper. I will not waver. I will not be unstable. I stand secure in this truth: He who has begun a good work in me will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
I reject every attempt of the enemy to connect my calling to trauma. God has pre-arranged a good life for me, and every trial I face is the school of the Holy Spirit, training my senses and developing my stamina.
When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord lifts up a standard in me. My response is the Word of God. My posture is prayer. I have backup — the angel of the Lord encamps around me and around my entire household.
I take up the sword of the Spirit and the shield of faith. I tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means harm me. I am not the one. I am not afraid. I am not alone.
In Jesus' name, amen.
